Nic Barnaschone
Nic Barnaschone is a highly experienced South African litigation attorney and notary with more than 45 years of legal practice, specialising in complex commercial litigation, corporate disputes, insolvency, business rescue and contractual enforcement. Admitted as an Attorney and Notary in 1977, he brings extensive courtroom experience, strategic judgment and a deep understanding of South African commercial and procedural law to SL Law’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice.
Nic’s distinguished legal career spans nearly five decades, during which he has advised and represented corporate clients, business owners, private individuals and fellow legal practitioners in complex litigation and dispute resolution matters.
His practice encompasses commercial and contractual disputes, company law litigation, shareholder disagreements, insolvency proceedings, business rescue, employment disputes, restraint of trade enforcement and insurance-related litigation.
His particular strength lies in identifying the decisive legal issues in complex disputes and developing litigation strategies that balance legal merit, commercial exposure and the practical consequences of litigation. His extensive experience enables him to assess not only the prospects of success, but also the procedural, financial and strategic considerations that determine the most effective course of action.
At SL Law, Nic contributes senior-level litigation expertise to matters involving contested commercial agreements, corporate governance disputes, financial distress, contractual enforcement and complex civil proceedings. His experience provides clients with the benefit of seasoned legal judgment in circumstances where litigation risk, commercial relationships and financial consequences require careful consideration.
Beyond his client work, Nic plays an important role in mentoring younger legal practitioners and contributing to the development of SL Law’s litigation capabilities.
His approach reflects the discipline of an experienced litigator: identify the real dispute, assess the evidence, understand the commercial consequences and pursue the most effective legal remedy.
